Ancient Americas, Pre-Columbian, Spanish Colonial, or Folk are just a few of the terms used to describe time periods and genres within the field of Latin American art. Like many art historical terms, these designations are historically rooted in colonialism. How can we rethink the way we talk and write about art history to provide a more thoughtful approach towards Latin American objects?

In this inaugural SAMA Salon, a panel of SAMA curators and scholars will discuss the current state and future of Latin American Art nomenclature. Speakers include:

  • Lucía Abramovich-Sánchez, Associate Curator of Latin American Art
  • Bernadette Cap, Andrew C. Mellon Curatorial Post-Doctoral Fellow
  • Ruben C. Cordova, Independent Scholar and Curator
  • Ella Diaz, Associate Professor of Latina/o/x Studies and Department of English at Cornell University

The link to participate in this event wil be sent to all registrants in an email on March 5th.
