In celebration of Día de Muertos, the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) is presenting an ofrenda (altar) designed by Amalia Mesa-Bains in honor of Emma Tenayuca, a San Antonian labor and civil rights activist known for her central role in the Pecan Shellers Strike of 1938.
An influential Chicana artist and cultural critic, Mesa-Bains pioneered the genre of altar-installation. Amalia Mesa-Bains: Archaeology of Memory, a major retrospective of her work, is currently on view at SAMA.
Join us for the unveiling on Tuesday, October 22, from 5:30–7:00 p.m. The event will feature a live performance by Mariachi Guerrera Quetzali. Visitors are invited to contribute names of loved ones. Free to all.
