Los Angeles-based artist Patrick Martinez examines memory, identity, social justice, cultural hybridity, and the changing LA landscape through a multimedia practice that includes painting, installation, and neon signage. Martinez’s Jaguar Guardian (2024) in the SAMA collection and now on view in Readymade Remix: New Approaches to Familiar Objects draws inspiration from the contemporary urban landscape along with the vibrant murals of the Cacaxtla archaeological site in Central Mexico (650-950 CE). Join SAMA curators Kristopher Driggers and Lana Meador as they make connections with Martinez’s work and the current exhibitions Maya Blue: Ancient Color, New Visions and Readymade Remix. Then hear Martinez’s perspective on these ideas and his studio practice.

Patrick Martinez (b. 1980, Pasadena, CA) earned his BFA with honors from Art Center College of Design in 2005. Patrick's work has been shown domestically and internationally and resides in the permanent collections of The Broad, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles among others.
