The Museum’s collection of African art consists largely of works that were donated to the Witte Museum between 1927 and 1993 and that were transferred to SAMA on the dissolution of the San Antonio Museum Association, an umbrella organization, in 1994. The collection includes masks, furniture, textiles, jewelry, and ritual objects representing many peoples and cultural traditions from east, west, central and south Africa. Of particular note is the collection of beaded garments and personal ornaments donated in 1954 by Rev. Guido Nuernberger, a Catholic missionary who served in the eastern region of present-day South Africa in the 1930s and 1940s.
