Mother’s Day at SAMA

Mother’s Day at SAMA

Looking for a new way to celebrate Mother’s Day? Spend your Sunday at the Museum! There’s something for every mom and maternal figure in your life to enjoy at SAMA.

Learn Together

The whole family can explore and enjoy the Museum’s current special exhibition, New African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations. The first exhibition of its kind, New African Masquerades presents the work of four artists working today in different regions of West Africa: Chief Ekpenyong Bassey Nsa (Nigeria), Sheku “Goldenfinger” Fofanah (Sierra Leone), David Sanou (Burkina Faso), and Hervé Youmbi (Cameroon).

Connect with Art

Want to stay on theme for the day? Check out our “I'm Here for the Goddesses” self-guided tour brochure to see how women have been portrayed across religions, cultures, and time. Another option: see how many depictions of mothers you can find across the Museum. See a few examples below!

Statuette of Isis holding the child Horus, Egyptian, 664-31 B.C., Bronze, h. 5 7/8 in. (15 cm); w. 1 9/16 in. (4 cm); d. 2 15/16 in. (7.5 cm), San Antonio Museum of Art, gift of the Linda Pace Foundation, 2009.16.1

Female Holding Child, Aztec, ca. A.D. 1300-1500, Earthenware, h. 5 3/8 in. (13.7 cm); w. 1 1/4 in. (3.2 cm); d. 2 1/8 in. (5.4 cm), San Antonio Museum of Art, gift of Gilbert M. Denman, Jr., 97.12.3

Brunch at Tre

Grab a bite to eat at Tre! Find a table by the Riverwalk, and unwind with food and drinks inspired by Tuscany, Italy. Tre Trattoria opens at 10 a.m. with a special four-course Mother’s Day brunch, plus SAMA members receive a 10% discount and free parking in the Museum lot. Book your reservations early!

River Views

Continue your day by the river with a stop at the River Pavilion. Find a seat and admire the mural by Suzy Gonzalez, or take a moment to reflect near the Taihu rock. You’ll also find our “Still Brewing Art” neon sign hanging on the brick wall behind the pavilion.

Snap a Pic!

Remember the day by taking photos together. There are unique spots and murals around the Museum that make fun backgrounds. If you need some inspiration, pick up a “Pics or it Didn’t Happen” brochure in the Great Hall.

Leave with a Gift

On your way home, be sure to stop by the Museum Shop. From books and puzzles to SAMA swag, hand cream, and silver jewelry, there is something for every interest. Don’t let your mom go home without a gift.

Bonus: Stop by the big metal sign in front of the Museum and find a spot on the back to add your admission sticker! Over the years, putting your sticker on the sign has become a tradition for many guests.
