The publication of this catalogue, dedicated to San Antonio's collection of American art, represents an important milestone for the Museum. It is the first comprehensive catalogue of SAMA's holdings of American art, a collection that began to be formed in the 1930s and has grown consistently, and impressively, since. The collection is large enough to give a representative overview of the development of the pieces. Among these are surely to be counted the John Singleton Copley, Thomas Sully, Edward Hicks, Albert Bierstadt, Martin Johnson Heade, John Singer Sargent, Edward Mitchell Bannister, Winslow Homer, Robert Henri, Ernest Lawson, Marsden Hartley, and Jacob Lawrence, each work highly evocative of the individual artist's oeuvre.
A National Image: The American Painting and Sculpture Collection in the San Antonio Museum of Art is one of a series of catalogues of SAMA's permanent collection that aim to make the Museum's holdings accessible to a wider scholarly and general audience.
