Consisting of portraits, landscapes, still life, religious subjects, and historical scenes, the Museum’s American collection reflects the events and ideas that had an impact on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
One of the largest and most comprehensive collections of its kind in the United States, the Museum’s Asian art collection features outstanding works of art from China, India, Japan, Korea, Nepal, Pakistan, Burma, and numerous other countries and covers nearly 6,000 years of Asian art history.
The Museum’s Contemporary collection features paintings, photography, and assemblage sculptures from local and international artists. The objects are grouped thematically, with sections devoted to traditional subjects as well as groupings devoted to identity and heritage and other social issues that defined the late twentieth century.
The Museum’s collection of art from the Ancient Mediterranean World features Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Etruscan objects.
The Museum’s Latin American art covers 4,000 years of historical objects from Mesoamerica, Central America, and South America. The collection features pieces from the Pre-Columbian and Spanish Colonial eras, and Modern/Contemporary pieces and those from the folk art tradition.
