Artists in Roman Italy created exquisite landscapes that reflect close ties with their environment, ranging from sunny seascapes and tranquil country shrines to vividly imagined views of Greece and Egypt. SAMA’s spring exhibition, Roman Landscapes: Visions of Nature and Myth from Rome and Pompeii, explores this inventive genre of Roman art through a selection of wall paintings, sculptures and luxury objects, many never before shown in the United States. In this lecture curator Jessica Powers offers a behind-the-scenes look at the exhibition, which will be on view from February 24-May 21, 2023.

Jessica Powers is Interim Chief Curator and Gilbert M. Denman, Jr., Curator of Art of the Ancient Mediterranean World at the San Antonio Museum of Art. She holds a doctorate in Classical Archaeology from the University of Michigan.

Lectures and Artist Conversations are made possible by generous support from the Louis A. and Frances B. Wagner lecture fund.

1 CPE/GT for Educators. To obtain your certificate please register, attend the lecture, and email Sarah Chavarria at sarah.chavarria@samuseum.org.
