In honor of No Ocean Between Us, SAMA’s Book Club will read Lion Island: Cuba’s Warrior of Words by award-winning author, Margarita Engle.

Lion Island takes place in nineteenth-century Cuba, a tumultuous time period when the country is fighting for freedom from Spain while also enforcing enslaved African and Chinese indentured servant labor. The novel follows historical figure Antonio Chuffat, a young man of African, Chinese, and Cuban-descent, who becomes a champion for civil rights through the power of his words.

Join us at our third book club to explore a slice of Cuban history through the eyes of Antonio.

Visit the Museum Shop to purchase the book. Also available online

The link to participate in this event will be sent to all registrants on April 2nd.
