Aphrodite and the Gods of Love includes several Roman copies and versions of Praxiteles' lost masterpiece, the Knidian Aphrodite, also showcased in his recent one-man shows in Paris and Athens. This lecture reconsiders the Knidia's alleged model, the famous courtesan or hetaira Phryne; its cultic and cultural roots; its address to its audiences, both male and female; and selected episodes in its reception from the Renaissance to the present.
