Parents and caregivers may check out a Silk Road Backpack to enhance their Museum experience. Filled with hands- on fun, backpacks are a unique way to engage children in learning about world cultures. Available for checkout at the SAMA Shop.

Arte Kids books (ages 0 to 4)

Explore SAMA’s newest series of children’s bilingual board books that teach children numbers, shapes and colors while introducing them to artworks in SAMA’s collection. Be sure to pick up your copy from the SAMA Shop, or click here to make an online purchase.

Programs For Children and Families

First Sundays for Families (all ages)

Children and families are invited to explore the collections, create art and share Sundays at SAMA. Enjoy interactive fun to include sketching, painting, storytelling, films, performances and more. There’s no need to make a reservation; just stop by as we explore a new gallery each month. This program is free for children 12 and under.

First Sundays for Families has been generously underwritten by the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, Edouard Foundation, Faye L. and William L. Cowden Charitable Foundation, San Antonio Museum of Art Docents, and Dan and Gloria Oppenheimer Fund and the Frances Margaret Seaver Fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation.


Family Flicks (all ages)

Family Flicks is our new outdoor film series in collaboration with Slab Cinema, held every second Saturday at sundown from February through November. Special performances and art activities begin one hour prior to screening time; films begin promptly at sundown. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and picnics! During inclement weather, Family Flicks will be held in the Museum's auditorium.


Art Crawl (caregivers and babies 0-18 months)

Moms, dads and caregivers, put your babies in their slings and take a walk with us through the galleries. Talks are geared towards adults while the art selections are chosen to engage both you and your infant. Every second Thursday morning from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Tours begin at the Front Desk and end with playtime and refreshments. Front-carrying baby carriers are encouraged and strollers are welcome.

 


SAMA Playdates (ages 2 to 4)

SAMA Playdates cultivate, nurture, and inspire creativity while developing an appreciation of art and world cultures. Every Wednesday morning from 10 to 11 a.m., children experience stories, gallery activities, hands-on art, movement and music.

 

 

 

 


Summer Camp

kidsSAMA’s Summer Youth program is back! Summer Camp, incorporates a variety of activities to include museum tours, painting and drawing, storytelling, music, creative writing, and more!  SAMA offers three unique week-long programs in a fun and safe educational environment. 

Tuition covers all materials; parents must provide lunch and transportation for students. 

All classes are held from 10 to 4 pm.

Summer Camp received generous support from the San Antonio Museum of Art Docents.

What's in Your Museum?

Summer 2012 Classes:

  • Dragons, Heroes and Monsters, Oh My! (Ages 6-8)
    June 11-15
    Uncover the mysteries of ancient Egypt, Greece and China during this one-week cultural expedition.  Become inspired by fascinating myths and legends while exploring the Museum’s collection.  Participants will create a Chinese dragon mask, sculpt their favorite mythical creature, paint an Egyptian god or goddess, and make a stone mosaic.
     
  • Fun with Folk Art (Ages 9-11)
    June 25-29
    Immerse yourself in the colorful world of folk art.  Explore the many cultures and unique materials found throughout the Latin American galleries. Participants will create masks, molas, weavings, puppets and much more! Gallery visits will be enhanced by cultural folktales and stories to inspire creativity.
     
  • Passport to Asia (Ages 6-8)
    July 9-13
    Journey through China, Japan, India and Southeast Asia during this introduction to the diverse cultures of Asia.  Students will learn the art of calligraphy, create Japanese anime figures and participate in a traditional tea ceremony.  While exploring the galleries, students will discover how ceramics and silks were traded along the Silk Road.


Family Guides

These guides are intended to help families and children of all ages make the most of what the Museum has to offer. They contain activities, questions and ideas for looking at works of art on display. Guides may also serve as classroom resources and can be used as pre- or post-visit learning tools in conjunction with guided or self-guided tours.
