Note: SAMA will be closed on the following Saturdays at 5:00 pm due to a holiday or private event: 12/24, 12/31, 1/21, 4/14, and 6/2.

General Museum admission is free to the public every Tuesday from 4 pm to 9 pm.

A surcharge may apply for special exhibitions.

Alamo Community Colleges (ACCD), Trinity University, University of Texas at San Antonio, University of the Incarnate Word, St. Anthony Elementary School, St. Peter Prince of Apostles Elementary School, Incarnate Word High School, and St. Anthony Catholic High School students, faculty, and staff receive free admission to the Museum with their school IDs through their SAMA Corporate Memberships.

Driving Directions

From the San Antonio International Airport:
Take US 281 South towards downtown. Exit on Josephine Street, approximately five miles. Turn left on to Grayson and continue under the overpass. Turn right at the stoplight, on to Broadway. Continue to Jones Avenue and turn right. The Museum is on the right. Free parking is across the street on the left.

From Downtown:
From the Alamo, take Alamo Plaza north and turn left on Third Street. Turn right on to Broadway. Continue approximately .75 miles to Jones Avenue, turn left. The Museum is on the right. Free parking is across the street on the left.

Accessibility

The Museum is fully accessible to the mobility impaired. Wheelchairs may be requested from a security guard at the front desk at the time of your visit. Wheelchairs are available on a very limited first-come, first-served basis.

Appraisals

The San Antonio Museum of Art does not evaluate or appraise works of art. For an art appraisal, please contact the American Society of Appraisers. The staff of the San Antonio Museum of Art also cannot comment on any work of art not in the Museum's collection.

Photography Policy

General Photography Rules

Visitors to the San Antonio Museum of Art are welcome to take souvenir photos and video of the exterior and interior of the museum for their personal use.  Flash photography and tripods may not be used in the galleries; they may be used on the grounds with advance permission from SAMA staff.  Visitors are asked to stay at least one foot away from works of art and display cases. The San Antonio Museum of Art can not authorize photography of works of art in special exhibitions or on loan to the museum. 

Subjects are asked to wear appropriate attire, and to not block walkways, doorways, entrances, or climb on any sculptures or trees. The San Antonio Museum of Art reserves the right to restrict access to photographers during museum events and activities.  In order to avoid conflict with certain large groups, please contact the Museum in advance.

On the Grounds: The San Antonio Museum of Art requires a $20 fee from photographers, both professional and amateur, taking formally posed, portrait-type photographs on the museum grounds. For groups of 10 or more, the fee is $50.00. This fee, either in cash or check, is required for each separate photo session and can be paid at the front desk upon arrival. The San Antonio Museum of Art does not provide changing rooms, and restrooms may not be used as dressing facilities.  

Inside the Museum: SAMA is pleased to make available limited opportunities for professional and amateur photographers to take formal photographs in the museum. Portrait photography inside the museum is available by appointment only for a fee of $100, payable by cash or check. Photographers pay upon arrival for the photo session.  Photographers must make appointments at least 48 hours in advance by calling (210) 978-8148 on Mon-Fri 9AM to 4PM. 

Commercial photography and filmmaking at the San Antonio Museum of Art can be arranged. However, we require that sufficient advance notice be given to the Director of Marketing at (210) 978-8136 or by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Commercial photography and videography sessions will be supervised by one or more members of the Museum staff.

Fees for Commercial Photography: 

  • Non-member San Antonio businesses $500 (reduced rates are available for SAMA’s Corporate Members)
  • Out-of-town businesses $1,000
  • Full payment of the location fee must be received prior to the start of the shoot.

Additional fees could include: 

  • Police/Security (mandatory for large sessions) $150 
  • (minimum of 4 hours/$30 each additional hour) 
  • After museum hours interior photography per hour $500

If closure of any property is required due to a film or photo shoot, an additional cost will be incurred. 

All photographers using the San Antonio Museum of Art grounds and/or buildings exteriors and interiors must acknowledge the Museum in any printed or audio-visual materials. The credit line should read: "Photographed at the San Antonio Museum of Art in San Antonio, Texas." 

Museum Policies

Please leave lunches, coats, backpacks, pens, markers, etc. in your vehicle. If in doubt, ask at the admissions desk. Please think twice about using your cell phone in the museum – it is a distraction to others.

Dispose of gum, food or beverages before entering the Museum.

Stay at least 12 inches away from the artworks, labels, display cases and gallery wall surfaces. Please walk carefully so that you do not bump into precious artworks or other people.

Use lead pencils if you are sketching or taking notes in the galleries. No pens, please. Do use your video or camera but NO FLASH, please. No photography is permitted in the special exhibitions.

Allow time to stop by the museum store for souvenirs. A wide assortment of items are available – some for less than a dollar!

Model Usage Rights

A visit to the San Antonio Museum of Art of participation in any of the Museum’s programs constitutes an agreement by the participant and/or the parent or guardian to authorize the Museum to photograph or film participants and/or their artwork from time to time, without compensation, for possible use in publicity, website, and marketing efforts.
