The Friends groups exist to support the special collection areas of the San Antonio Museum of Art through education, travel opportunities, volunteer participation and special events.

The following areas currently support Friends groups: Friends of American & Decorative Art, Friends of Ancient Art, Friends of Asian Art, SAMA Contemporaries and Friends of Latin American Art.

Museum membership is a prerequisite before joining a friends group.
