Guided tours support classroom learning by applying curriculum concepts.
A Walk through Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome »
Discover mummy cases, glass containers, painted vases, portraits, and dinnerware and find out how they were used in the ancient world.  Meets many Social Studies, Fine Art and Antiquities Linguistic and Cultural 3-12 TEKS.  Ideal for 3rd grade, middle school and high school curriculums.

This art and history tour introduces students to American landscapes, portraits, sculptures, furniture and everyday objects from the American Colonial period to the present.  Meets many Social Studies and Fine Art 3-12 TEKS.  Ideal for 5th, 8th and 11th grade Social Studies curriculums.

Discover 6,000 years of culture, world history and art by exploring the Museum’s diverse collections.  From the Americas to Asia, from Oceania to Europe, explore the world without leaving San Antonio!  Meets many Social Studies and Fine Art K-12 TEKS.  Ideal for all ages/grade levels.

Asian Caravan »

Travel through China, Japan, India and other Asian countries on this cultural expedition.  On your way, you may see a colorful sand mandala, a suit of samurai armor, and rooms from Imperial China.  Meets many Social Studies, Fine Art and Asian Language Cultural and Linguistic 3-12 TEKS.  Ideal for all ages/grade levels.

Celebrate art and culture on this tour of Latin American Art. Art and science go hand-in-hand.  Explore how scientific concepts are expressed in art and how artists utilize materials and technology to create their works.  Chemistry, geometry, mathematics, physics and optics converge in art to create this exciting tour.  Meets many Math, Science and Fine Arts K-12 TEKS.  Ideal for Math, Physical Science and Fine Art K-12 curriculums.

The Parts of Art »

How is a work of art created? This tour introduces younger students to the fundamental elements of art including line, color and shape.  Older students can discover the techniques and tricks that artists use to achieve motion, perspective, illumination and texture.  Meets many Math, Science and Fine Art K-12 TEKS.  Ideal for Math, Physical Science and Art K-12 curriculums.

Travel the Trade Routes »

Historic trade routes brought together a remarkable mix of art objects now found in SAMA’s collection. Blue and white porcelains, Islamic tiles, Talavera ceramics, coffee, tea and chocolate vessels can all be featured in this tour focusing on global commerce. Meets many Social Studies, Economics, Math and Fine Art 3-12 TEKS. Ideal for World Studies and Economics curriculums.

Wednesday Workshops

Wednesday Workshops are two hour educational experiences consisting of a specialized guided tour of the galleries, and followed by a hands-on project that is related to the culture and theme.
Asian Cultures »

Students will travel East from India to China, and cross the sea to Japan in this Asian-themed workshop. Participants will see various cultural artifacts along the way including a Tibetan sand mandala, a Japanese carriage (palanquin) and two reconstructed rooms from Imperial China. This adventure concludes with a related art project. Meets many Social Studies, Fine Art and Asian Linguistic and Cultural 3-12 TEKS.

  • Asian Cultures workshops are 2 hours long.
  • Funding is available to cover the admission fees of $3 per student and $3 per chaperone upon request. 
  • Two weeks advance reservation is required for Asian Cultures workshops.
  • SAMA can accommodate a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 30 students per workshop.

Contemporary Expressions »

In this workshop students will develop a broader understanding of various artistic expressions from the Contemporary period, including the language of art and the discovery of new materials used by artists. This art appreciation experience will conclude with a hands-on art project.  Meets many Social Studies and Fine Art 3-12 TEKS.

This workshop will reveal the lifestyles and beliefs of Ancient Egypt.  Students will explore the Museum’s collection of art and artifacts, including mummy cases, hieroglyphs, statues and pottery.  The workshop concludes with a hands-on art project.  Meets many Social Studies and Fine Art K-12 TEKS.  Ideal for all ages/grade levels.

Exploring Latin America: Past and Present »

This workshop follows a timeline of cultural and artistic changes as students discover the implications of Columbus’ 1492 voyage.  Students will explore the Pre-Columbian, Spanish Colonial, Folk Art and Contemporary art galleries in our Latin American Wing and conclude the trip with a related art project.  Meets many Social Studies, Fine Art and Spanish Cultural and Linguistic 3-12 TEKS.  Ideal for World Studies, 4th and 7th grade Texas History and Spanish classes.

    Learn about the early formation of the United States of America through its paintings and sculptures.  Historical discussions will include British colonization, the founding of our country, Westward Expansion and lifestyles from the 17th through 19th centuries.  This adventure concludes with a period-appropriate art project.  Meets many Social Studies and Fine Art K-12 TEKS.  Ideal for 1st, 5th, 8th and 11th grade Social Studies curriculums.

      While in the Museum’s galleries, students will be able to identify significant examples of religious art.  They will develop a deeper understanding of how art reflects the beliefs of a culture.  A hands-on project will conclude this workshop.  Meets World History 19-22 TEKS.  Limited to High School students.

      Life in Ancient Greece and Rome »

      During their visit students will learn about daily life in ancient Greece and Rome.  By examining objects such as painted vases, marble statues, and mosaics, students will gain insight into the social customs, mythological traditions, lifestyles, and artistic achievements of these civilizations.  Meets many Social Studies and Fine Art 3-12 TEKS.  Ideal for many Social Studies and Literature curriculums.
