The Asian art collection is housed in the new Lenora and Walter F. Brown Asian Art Wing, a 15,000 square foot suite of galleries which opened in May 2005. Over the past 70 years, the Museum’s Asian art collections have grown to include more than 1,500 works from China, India, Japan, Korea, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tibet, and Vietnam. The collection spans nearly 6,000 years of history.
The Chinese collection is the largest and most extensive of SAMA’s Asian art holdings. Comprised primarily of ceramics, the collection also features archaic bronze vessels, paintings, furniture, textiles, cloisonné and other decorative arts. The Chinese galleries are separated by cultural ideas and periods beginning with the Arts of Early China featuring tomb furnishings in bronze and ceramic from the Neolithic through the Tang dynasty to a stunning installation devoted to Life in Imperial China featuring a Chinese Scholar’s Studio and a Chinese Woman’s Bedroom. Chinese ceramics and decorative arts from the 10th through the 19th century are displayed in the new addition, where translucent windows fill the galleries with natural light. A small, intimate gallery features Song dynasty ceramics. The Liao dynasty collection, housed in its own gallery, is one of the largest outside of China. The Imperial Chinese Art Gallery boasts a strong collection of ceramics and decorative arts from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, and includes blue-and-white porcelains spanning five-hundred years of production from the 14th through the 19th centuries as well as monochromes, fahua, famille verte, famille rose, and other porcelain traditions.
Works from India and Pakistan are showcased in the South Asian galleries. The collection begins with ceramics vessels from the Indus River Valley (3,500 BCE) civilization and 18th century Mughal and Rajput painting. Excellent examples of Buddhist and Hindu sculpture in schist, granite and sandstone as well as examples of Indian sandstone and wooden architecture. Nepalese sculpture, as well as Jain sculpture and painting, are also featured. The Tibetan Art Gallery features Buddhist devotional sculpture, painting, and decorative arts from the 12th century to the present. The most notable installation in this gallery is the Medicine Buddha Sand Mandala created by a group of Tibetan monks from Drepung Loseling monastery in Karnataka, India in 2001.
The adjoining Korean gallery showcases ceramics from the 5th to the 20th century. The distinctive collection includes Korean painting, funerary ceramics from the Silla dynasty, celadons from the Koryo dynasty, and white wares from the Choson dynasty. Buddhist art from China provides a thematic bridge between Buddhist objects from Korea and Southeast Asia. The displays include examples from the 6th century through the 15th century, with objects appearing in a variety of media: rock cut stone; painted limestone; small devotional bronze figures; carved wood; and cast iron. The Southeast Asian art gallery displays Buddhist and Hindu sculpture from Cambodia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam in carved and lacquered wood, granite, sandstone and gilt bronze. The ceramics collection highlights 15th and 16th century ceramics from Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam.
The Japanese gallery provides a chronological display of art in a dark castle-like setting. Displays begin with a stunning Jomon period jar and move to Japanese Buddhist sculpture and painting from the Heian through the Edo periods. Seasonal paintings and ceramics are highlighted in a traditional Japanese alcove or tokonoma. Hanging scrolls, and screens from the Edo period are on display and in constant rotation. Cases dedicated to Japanese lacquer feature writing boxes, picnic boxes and a rich assortment of inro. An excellent grouping of Meiji-period ceramics, cloisonné and metalwork are also featured. Wood block prints from the Edo and Meiji periods are also frequently on rotation.
The Asian Special Exhibitions Gallery, located between the Chinese Buddhist and Japanese galleries, features rotating exhibitions throughout the year.
