Concert: Jazz Meets Classical XV at SAMA: The Music of Latin America

The San Antonio Museum of Art and Musical Offerings present the Jazz Meets Classical (JMC) concert series, a unique collaboration between jazz and classical musicians in San Antonio, which presents compositions that combine jazz and classical elements, showcasing the museum’s collection, and creating a memorable experience for the museum audience.
The programming for this concert will closely mirror events in the art history of Latin America, beginning with the European influence on music during the Spanish and Portuguese Colonial Expansion. With the fight for independence that began in South America in the early 1800’s, a national identity in both art and music emerged. By 1900, Latin American artists and musicians were working on an emerging International Style.
The concert program will follow this progression musically by featuring classical music of countries from Europe and Latin America, such as Spain, Cuba, Argentina, Mexico and Brazil. The program will then progress to the 1950’s, when several popular forms of music began to emerge from Brazil, particularly the samba and the bossa nova. The most famous pioneers of these forms were influenced by West Coast jazz from America, particularly from artists like Gerry Mulligan, Paul Desmond, and Dave Brubeck. The cool West Coast jazz sound was heard in both melodic as well as harmonic components of the Brazilian music. In the 1960’s, after several of the Brazilian musicians performed in America, more jazz players in this country became acquainted with and incorporated bossa nova, samba and other Brazilian styles into jazz.
