"Designing the Beautiful: Economics and Politics in the Art of Ancient Greek Coins" Lecture by Peter van Alfen
Sunday, February 21, 3 pm
Auditorium. Free with Museum admission. Reception to follow.
What appears on coins is often a calculated statement of nationalism and prestige, but it must also serve the basic function of establishing trust in the economic system. Drawing on examples from the travails of U.S. coin design, Dr. Peter van Alfen, the Margaret Thompson associate curator of Greek coins at the American Numismatic Society in New York, explores how the ancient Greeks sought to balance politics and economics in the design of their coins.
This lecture is made possible by generous support from Louis A. and Frances B. Wagner.
