Released: Thursday, March 1st, 2007

Faith Ringgold, painter, writer, speaker, mixed media sculptor and performance artist, will be speaking at the San Antonio Museum of Art on Tuesday, March 20, as part of the Art of the Needle programming. Ms. Ringgold’s work focuses on painted story quilts undertaken to rewrite African-American history, and her lecture will focus on SAMA’s recent acquisition of Ringgold’s The Funeral, 1986, from her series Lover’s Trilogy.

A professor emeritus at the University of California, San Diego, Ringgold has been the recipient of more that 75 awards including 18 honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degrees. Her art is included in many private and public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Boston Museum of Fine Art. She has also written and illustrated 14 children’s books, including the Caldecott Honored Tar Beach.

This lecture is generously supported by the Mary Kargl Lecture fund.
